I wrote a post on this before but have changed my method and materials a little since then so thought I would do another one.
There are several different methods people use for making wet wipes. In this post, I will explain the method that works best for me.
Time to complete project – about 20 minutes
Cost – approximately $1.00 per hundred wipes
For the paper towels, I used Viva brand paper towels that we got on sale at Walgreens. Viva paper towels are tough and absorbent. First you will want to gather all the items you are going to need.
1 re-useable pop-up wet wipe container
2 cup liquid measuring cup
Small whisk
1 roll paper towels
Scissors
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or lotion and 5 capsules Vit. E
Shampoo
Hydrogen Peroxide
Ascorbic Acid
Cleansing Solution
You will want to make your cleansing solution first so that it will be ready to pour on the paper towels after you place them in your container.
Fill the measuring cup almost to the 2 cup line with water.
Add 1 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil or 1 tablespoon of your favorite lotion and 5 capsules of
Vit. E. Poke a hole in each capsule with a sharp knife and squeeze the contents into your cleansing solution.
2 tsp. shampoo (if you are not using Viva brand paper towels, you will need to use 1 TBSP of shampoo)
2 cap fulls hydrogen peroxide, 3% solution
A pinch of ascorbic acid (maybe about 1/16 of a teaspoon) to help prevent mold
Set cleansing solution aside
Wet Wipes
First, take about 50 paper towels off the roll.
Place 4 paper towels together, one on top of the other and line them up evenly.
Fold paper towels in half
Fold in half again lengthwise and carefully cut along the fold.
Open paper towels
Repeat process until you have folded and cut all 50 paper towels. Gently press about one third of the paper towels lengthwise into the container
Now you will need your cleansing solution. Using a small whisk, stir the mixture constantly with one hand, while using your other hand to pour one third of the mixture on top of your paper towels.
Place another one third of your paper towels into the container.
Pour on another one third of the mixture, all the while stirring it constantly.
Place the remaining third of the paper towels on the top and pour the rest of the mixture on them.
Now pick up the entire stack of paper towels. Take the bottom third and turn it upside down and place back in the container. Take the middle third and turn it upside down. Place on top of bottom third. Take the top third and turn it upside down. Place it on top of the middle third. This helps to make sure all the shampoo and lotion does not concentrate on just a few paper towels.
Close container tightly. Turn on each side and then turn upside down and shake. This helps the cleansing solution to be absorbed evenly by all the paper towels. If not using Viva paper towels, pour off the excess. Just turn the container upside down and open the pop-up window to let the water run out. If using Viva paper towels, there should be no excess to pour off. They will absorb all the cleansing solution. Now open the container and turn entire stack of wet wipes upside down one more time. Place gently back into container. Make sure edges are even so wet wipes don’t tear when you pull them out of the container.
Wet wipes are ready to use. (I can’t really pull them out the top like this. I just did this for the fun of the effect. :-) )
