For the dishcloth in the first picture, I used the following stitch - single crochet, chain 1 and skip a stitch; single crochet, chain 1 and skip a stitch, and so on throughout the pattern. Border is one row of single crochet.
For the dishcloth in the second picture, I used the following stitch pattern - 1 single crochet, one half double crochet, one double crochet and repeated this across the first row. On the second row, I did the reverse - one single crochet, one double crochet, and one half double crochet. The goal was to always make sure a single crochet went into another single crochet, a half double crochet into another half double crochet, and a double crochet into a double crochet. It made the dishcloth almost look like it has a flowery design. I did not make a border, but it looks kind of like it needs something. Maybe a flower? Both dishcloths are approximately 8" x 8".
I also tried making a round dishcloth, kind of granny style with cluster stitches. Here is the result.
Dishcloth is approximately 8" in diameter.
