We've been drinking lots of bottled water lately and are having a hard time disposing of so many jugs. It seemed like there must be some crafts that can be made from them. I tried making a fall decoration for my wall and this is what I came up with. I used a utility knife and scissors to cut the bottle. After cutting the shape I wanted, I applied yellow gold Mod Podge (recipe below) as a semi transparent "paint." A hot glue gun came in handy for applying the yarn, beads, and sequins. To mount the finished product on the wall, I just used a little plasty tack. Here it is! Yellow Gold Mod Podge
Mix: 3 Tbsp. Mod Podge (glossy or matte; I like glossy) 5 drops yellow food coloring 1 tsp. gold glitter acrylic craft paint To use, apply to the item you want to paint with brush or sponge and then was brush or sponge immediately in hot water and soap. Dish soap gets it out more easily. A while back I posted about a 14 year old boy named Isaiah Scruggs. In February of 2013, at the age of 13, he fell out of a tree and broke his back. His injury is considered a “complete” injury. He is unable to walk and is paralyzed from the T5, or just above the belly button, down.
The challenges of spinal injuries consist of a lot more than not being able to walk. When some muscles are paralyzed, the person with the injury must learn to use other muscles to compensate for the ones that no longer work. He must also learn new ways of doing things. In addition, the inability to properly perform everyday bodily functions can lead to serious problems, such as bowel obstructions, urinary tract infections, and so forth. Since a person who cannot walk cannot put weight on his feet, he is more likely to have problems such as thinning of the bones or bones that fracture easily. If a part of the body that has no feeling gets bumped or injured, bruising or sores or even infection can result. Lack of sensation in a body part can make it difficult to assess injury to that area. People with spinal injuries like to enjoy life as much as those who do not have such injuries. Perhaps they need a wheelchair to get around. That is OK. One lady explained it like this, “A person who cannot see well needs glasses. I cannot walk well, so I need a wheelchair.” A person who uses a wheelchair is not “different” from others. He likes to do the same things, and the wheelchair helps him to do just that. Thankfully, there are things available that can help Isaiah with his various needs. One of these things is a special type of toilet seat that allows him to take care of his bodily functions properly. Also, there is a shower transfer board that allows him to be able to get in and out of the shower on his own. There is a machine called an FES machine which can help stimulate circulation in the legs and keep the bones healthy. A standing frame would allow Isaiah to put weight on his legs and keep his bones healthy, making them less likely to become weak or easy to fracture. There are certain types of wheels that can be purchased for his wheelchair that would hold up to outdoor activities he might like to do. While all these items are wonderful, they also cost a lot of money, and insurance does not cover everything. Sometimes insurance will cover an item, but it may take a long time before insurance approves it. One example of this would be the FES machine. Insurance may pay for it, but it can take several months to a year to receive approval from the insurance company. To help with all these needs, Isaiah’s mother has started a fundraiser at Gofundme.com . You can donate to that fund through the widget on the sidebar of this blog. The goal for Isaiah’s fundraiser is ten thousand dollars. So far, only $585.00 has been raised. Please pray about whether or not God would have you to give and how much He would have you give. Any donation amount would be a blessing to Isaiah and his family. Thank you! |
