The praying mantis is one of God's fascinating creatures. The one shown above was on the railing of our back porch and is pictured here at just about actual size, approximately twice the length of my thumb or about 4 inches. The praying mantis is named for the prayer like stance it often takes. The word "mantis" is derived from a Greek word that means prophet or fortune teller. The amazing mantis is a carnivore. These creatures eat other insects, small tree frogs, lizards, and even mice and hummingbirds. They also eat some nesting birds. The enemies of the praying mantis include snakes, large frogs, spiders of about the same size as the praying mantis, giant hornets, monkeys, larger birds, and bats. Bats are their most feared enemy. Some mantids have one hollow ear with which they can detect the ultrasonic emissions of the bat and thus change their flight path in order to avoid becoming the bat's next meal. Both newsfinder.org and theprayingmantis.org have interesting articles about the life cycle, diet, and enemies of the praying mantis. Even these creatures bring praise to God, as Psalm 146 says, "Praise ye the LORD... Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl." (See verses 1 and 10) |
