Craft Roundup -- Scarf, Shawl, and Floor Mat

8/29/2016

Well, this craft roundup is long overdue!  Sometimes life is just full of many things.  During the past couple of weeks, we finalized things selling our old trailer and also had our second yard sale.  Now things are all done with that as far as I know.  Yay! We were worn out after that and took a few days to rest.  Also, Mom and Dad got back from their trip up north.

However, there has been time for a little crafting, and here are just a few things I have been working on.

Teddy Bear Button Scarf

WalMart had this Caron Simply Soft brown variegated yarn on clearance.  It was so soft and cozy, but I only had a little.  What to make?  I decided on a small scarf with flowers and teddy bear buttons.

The stitch used was half double crochet, and the flowers were worked right into the scarf -- two flowers every 10th row.  After finishing all the yarn, I added buttons to secure the scarf.  It is so warm and comfy.  I might just keep this one for myself and wear it in the fall or winter.

Star Flower Shawl

The first star flower shawl was so fun and simple I decided to make another one.  This was made from old acrylic yarn my aunt gave me. The yarn had once been my grandmother's.  The yarn is very similar to Red Heart Super Saver yarn.  This shawl required about 10 ounces of this pretty yarn.

Floor Mat

Among my grandmother's old yarn was this beautiful royal blue and straw colored yarn.  The royal blue was older than the other yarn and was a bit hard to work with.  It isn't nice enough to sell or give away but plenty good enough to make something practical.

It is hard for me to get up off the floor, so I made this mat for using while cleaning places on the floor that can't be reached with the mop.  First I made a square of about 31 x 31 inches.  Then I folded it in half and made a border all around the edge with the straw colored yarn.  The stitched used in this project was the fcr shell stitch that I used for the bear hat and baby blanket.  It is a fast and simple stitch and the floor mat worked up very quickly. The finished project with the border is about 32 x 16 inches.

Thank you for taking time to stop by and look. I hope you enjoyed your visit.  What kind of crafts have you made this week?  I'd enjoy hearing about them.  You can tell me about them in the comments if you like.

Have a great week!

Weekly Craft Roundup -- Shawl and Teddy Bear Blanket Set

8/6/2016

Whew!  Almost didn't make it this week.  I only did three or four projects, but the teddy bear blanket set was quite challenging.  Here are the two projects from the preview post earlier this week.

Crochet Star Flower Shawl

The beautiful yarn used in this shawl is Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable.  WalMart had it on clearance for $2.50 a skein, so I grabbed a couple.  It is easy to work with, but it is hard to take out if a mistake is made.  It just seems to stick together or something after it is stitched in.  The stitch I used is a lace flower crochet stitch, pretty but very, very simple.

The shawl will be entered into the fair later this year, and then I plan to send it to a special friend after that.

Here is a closeup of the stitch.

I tried making a pompom edging on it using a youtube tutorial for a guide, but it didn't quite come out like the edging in the tutorial. :-)  I was still happy with it though. It still looked nice and went well with the lacy stitch of the shawl.

This is the tutorial I used for making the lacy star flower stitch.  As mentioned above, the stitch is very, very simple.

Teddy Bear Baby Set

This was a bit more challenging than the shawl, but it was fun.  First I made the hat using this youtube video tutorial.  After I made the hat, I thought a whole set would look quite cute.  The stitch in the hat is an fcr shell stitch.  I looked and looked for a tutorial using that kind of a shell stitch in a blanket but there wasn't one, so I tried to see if I could just figure out how to do it.  It ended up being pretty easy and quick to work up.

Next I did the booties.  Booties aren't my favorite thing to do, but the set needed some booties.  These are just simple, basic booties although the fcr shell stitch was incorporated into them as well.  I decided to take the easy way with the booties and just added little teddy bear buttons.  These buttons came from the sewing section in WalMart.  Cost was $1.97 for 5 buttons, so there are three buttons left for another project.

Lastly, the blanket needed a teddy bear applique.  So, I looked around the internet at pictures until I found one that looked simple enough to use as a guide. That worked up pretty quickly.  The harder part was attaching it to the blanket.  That was done today and then the yarn ends of the blanket were tucked in.  And, the set was finished.  All ready now to enter into the fair later this year!
